A hodgepodge is a disorganized mess!
A collection of thoughts or ideas without a design or organization is more or less a hodgepodge. You can have a great product or content but unless you structure it in a way for people to understand, it will remain a hodgepodge.
I did not really understand this consciously but my subconscious grasp the concept while I lay sleeping. I do know it was about being disorganized and what that leads to. Let me explain.
The other night I went over to visit my neighbors Kip and Richie. I happened to notice how neat and organized he had his garage. He even had a spool for the garbage bags. No hodgepodge there that is for sure. Richie also is very handy with woodworking. He makes amazing cutting boards and could probably start a small business with them. I have purchased several and am thinking these will be some great Christmas gifts.
I was just amazed at how his garage was so organized and serviceable—he is usually in there creating projects with Kip’s help. They work so well together and there does not seem to be a need for reorganization there.
Later that night I had a teleconference with Starr Host about tips for blogging. They had some great information that they shared for beginners and not so novice business people. They too realize the problems if something is disorganzied.
That night I had a dream that I encouraged Richie to start his own website. He was very reluctant but thought about it and decided to try. He wanted to create more cutting boards but Kip thought they should hire a writer (or virtual assistant) to work on his website. He felt he could do both; after all he knew the work it took to keep the garage in working order and turn out his cutting boards.
Kip decided to challenge him. She asked him to make a tray of what she liked about baking. Richie came back with a giant tray of baking utensils, 2 sets of oven mitts and some chocolate chips (remember this was just my dream).
He placed the tray in front of us but then could not think of how to go about writing what Kip would do with the tray. So, for all intents and purpose, it just sat there—a giant hodgepodge. It was a jumbled mess with no structure. He had no idea how to proceed from there.
Richie had most of the ingredients correct but even with that he needed help to make sense of it. He needed a written blog for others to understand. It was not even interesting in this basic form because it lacked direction and structure.
When I woke up it hit me. Many people have skills or products to share but without the proper direction, flow, audience, and appearance—it may never be shared. Somehow I had tied in seeing Richie’s garage with Starr Host’s essential tips for blogging while I was sleeping.
The point of my dream is this: social media is an amazing way to share your product or ideas but if you do not know what you are doing or the latest trends in SM, no one may ever get to share it with you. It is just a hodgepodge with no direction or design. It takes training to understand social media:
- Blogging
- Website
- Facebook business pages
- Applications
- Google+
- Virtual assistants
- Keywords & Tags
- FKscores
- HootSuite
It takes these and many other aspects of Social Media to make a website/blog successful. There are 2 ways of making this work for you. Train to do it all yourself or hire someone with the expertise. Kip & Ritchie could not make a better choice. If I were to start a business, YOU would be my first choice:) Awake or sleeping, you do a GREAT job.
