The latest trend in social media is Instagram. For those of you not familiar with it here is a quick introduction. Instagram is an online photo-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook or Twitter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instagram).

Starrhost, a website devoted to technology, WordPress, and creating successful websites recommends Instagram for your business. Check out Why you should use Instagram for your business.

Instagram is a free application (app) available from Google play and iTunes App Stores. It is only offered only for Apple and Android devices at present. It is the most popular mobile photo app downloaded today. It allows you to not only share your personal photos on social media sites, it provides an opportunity for you to sharpen your photographic skills and create another platform to build up your business and share it with the public.

Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. It was launched in October 2010. It gained such popularity that in January 2013 it had about 90 million registered users. According to the Wall Street Journal, Facebook purchased the app and there is a couple reasons why:

·         90 million Monthly Active Users

·         40 million Photos Per Day

·         8,500 Likes Per Second

·         1,000 Comments Per Second   (full stats, now listed on the company’s site)

Sandi Krakowski (www.arealchange.com)teaches that Instagram “builds a culture by letting people see into your life and business through pictures.” It creates a trust by showing others who you really are consistently, personally and photographically.

You simply download the app to your phone where you will be prompted to create a free account. Being a social media application requires a user name and password. Then you will be joining the millions who already have accounts and have been sharing their amazing photos.

Just like Facebook and Twitter you now can follow or be followed by other users. Instagram has a profile icon that allows you to search for friends either within Instagram or Facebook and Twitter. Those you add will now be found in your feed as they would any other newsfeed.

Just as in other social medias you can LIKE ands leave a comment. You photos will also be viewed in the friends you have added. By clicking the EXPLORE tab to locate new users you might want to follow or just to examine photographs that interest you.

By configuring your Instagram account your photos can also post to Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, Facebook and even your email account. Just check the settings to see which you prefer to have ON. You are prompted to confirm which sites you wish to post to and can turn it OFF at any time.

The adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” (Frederick R. Barnard), simply means a picture can convey a message what might take too many words.  In business, we all know what visual forms of media can do to enhance your product (Pinterest is one social media that reinforces this concept).

The printed word has its place and now with apps such as Instaword and Insatquote, you can now combine your talents into creating a word/photo graphic that relays just what you want to share on social media platforms.

Instagram is a visual telegram that lets users and followers communicate and capture images to share that might not transcend text. These photos reach so many more followers and are easier to understand some written statements. You can see, in real time, what is happening in a photograph rather than trying to decipher the meaning in a written word.

Instagram lets you visually share your world and your business with a larger audience, is immediate and easily accessible.  Instagram teaches focus—on taking photos, on conveying a story and on successfully sharing a message. Find your focus on Instagram—personally and professionally.
